Fall 2015 in the tech world has been defined by buzz over Apple’s release of several new products, most notably the new iPhone models 6S and 6S Plus. Although many users have criticized the company for not incorporating more bold new features into the design of the new phones, the best thing about Apple is that even in a supposed ‘down year’ there are still enough advanced characteristics present in the new phones to trigger a torrent of consumer purchases. Far from being content with releasing uninspired phone after uninspired phone and resting on their laurels, Apple seems proud to consistently push the boundaries of what we believe a mobile phone is capable of.
Here are the top 10 reasons that you should sprint to your nearest dealership or flagship store to purchase the phone you didn’t know you wanted, but won’t be able to get enough of. For ease of understanding, we are going to combine the features of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus in this review; the differences, although important to some, appear negligible to us. In no particular order:
1. New Aluminum Alloy
The design looks similar to the 6, but the 7000 aluminum alloy is the same material that is used in the Apple Watch. Durable and strong, this alloy should allay the bending fears of Apple denizens whose pants were too tight for the 6!
2. Stronger Glass and More Personalized Designs
In addition to the classic silver, gold, and cloud grey, the 6S Plus will come in a rose gold color — perfect for users who want to show off their personalities. The massive 5.5 inch touchscreen will astound viewers with its clarity and impressive with its strength and resilience.
3. Improved Camera
Massive upgrades to be found in the rear camera, to the tune of a 12-mega pixel iSight camera that provides 50% more pixels and 50% more focus pixels. Action photographers will be drawn to the rapid autofocus feature, and deep trench isolation technology will ensure detailed and more natural portraits of all of your favorite subjects.
4. Vastly Improved Video Capability
Both new iPhones feature 4K video capability, which is a huge upgrade from any preexisting Apple-produced phone. This new technology breaks frames down into over 8 million pixels and is almost guaranteed to turn your home videos into Oscar-bait movies. Sort of in between the camera and video upgrades is the increase in panorama size, up to 64 megapixels. Turn on those cameras and direct them at anything, fast or slow, in the world around you — no phone on the market has a better camera system.
5. Excellent Quality Front Camera
Oh yeah, did we mention that your selfie obsession won’t be stifled by this iPhone either? The front camera has a 5-megapixel FaceTime HD camera that uses the phone’s Retina display to add a flash to create even more detailed selfies of your best (and maybe even worst) moments. The front camera also offers an upgrade called ‘Live Photos’, which lets users easily create a short animated GIF by simply holding down the screen in a particular place. With a front camera flash that is comparable to the TrueTone flash in the back, selfie enthusiasts will be able to Vine, Instagram, and post like never before.
6. Better, More Advanced Hardware
We could bore you with numbers — well, maybe we will, just for a bit! The 6S Plus will include a 64-bit A9 chip, which Apple claims can speed CPU processes up by over 70% and graphics tasks by over 90%! The A9 chip also comes with an M9 motion processor that promises Touch ID hardware that is twice as fast as older models. The advances don’t stop there — the wireless chip is also being upgraded, to the tune of new 300-Mbps LTE technology, 23 available LTE bands, and a 866-Mpbs 802.11 ac wifi system that is again twice as fast as comparable models.
7. Price, Price, Price
Obviously with the release of a new phone model, Apple is dropping the prices for its old models (a 5C is now free with a two year plan!!!) However, the 6S and 6S Plus are not too bad on the price side, averaging a little over $300 per phone over the course of a two year plan. This can work out to a mere $30 a month with a traditional payment plan.
8, 9, 10. 3D Touch!
This is obviously the new feature that everyone is talking the most about, so we’ll devote our last three slots to a few of its more interesting features. The new force feedback system increases the levels of finger interaction that your fingers are capable of by two, adding a ‘pop’ and ‘peek’ function. Peek opens up a preview-style window to whatever you’re touching (website, picture, address,) while Pop allows you to continue on to that preview content from whatever previous page you were browsing.
The Pop and Peek features will increase the functionality of maps by allowing users to drop pins and then preview the areas around those pins and the locations actually underneath the pins. App developers will also be able to take advantage of these new features — Instagram is already workshopping an update that allows users to improve their search speeds by previewing pictures rather than having to individually click on each picture to expand it. Secondary and tertiary forms of touch appear to be the future of smartphones, and Apple has once again beaten its mass-market smartphone competition to the bunch.
Overall, the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus are phones worthy of the labels ‘newsworthy’ and ‘extraordinary’. All readers of this site are highly encouraged to go check out the improved hardware and software for themselves, and marvel at the peek into the future that 3D touch is presenting.
